The North Atlantic circulation has great influence on heat and moisture. as a result of global warming, ice sheet in Greenland and north pole have been melting. So salinity of Atlantic is becoming lower, which becomes an obstacle of convection current in the vertical direction. North Atlantic circulation is at risk of stagnating.

The project is located at Atlantic in the south of Greenland, where the north Atlantic circulation has problem exchanging energy, and the area is also called sinking area. The project is meant to monitor and adjust salinity difference between different depth of ocean, maintain the current running, recover cracked and melting ice sheet and save water for future.

The project consists of two ring tangent in general outline, and seawater is disposed along the ring continuously. The big ring is responsible for the drawing and the separation of mixed seawater. The small ring is responsible for saving freshwater and for research and living. Low temperature in the north pole and height of gigantic structure provide natural advantage to the architecture to dispose seawater. Seawater is lift to upper air. Then freshwater and salt water are separated by freezing desalination process, taking advantage of low temperature. The salt water in high concentration is drained  through antennal pipes into the sea . One part of freshwater is transported into the small ring to be stored as domestic water ,the other part  is carried to the ice shell to repair it .The  whole object is supported by a ship typed foundation  floating at sea .There is a needle-liked probe connected to the foundation to monitor the differential concentration , and the foundation can move to the area in need of it in this way.

Lucie Koldova announced as new “Das Haus” designer

“Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is a special kind of installation. For the seventh year running, the international interiors show imm cologne has invited an international designer to use architecture, interior design and furniture in a simulated house in order to make a personal statement about contemporary living. At the next edition of imm cologne, the approximately 180-square-metre installation located in Hall 2.2 of the Pure segment will be built and fitted out in accordance with the ideas of the Czech designer Lucie Koldova.

“Following the transatlantic ‘Haus’ by Todd Bracher, we are returning to Europe with Lucie Koldova, and turning our attention to the Czech Republic – the home of superb glassware”, reveals the Creative Director of imm cologne, Dick Spierenburg. “We were particularly impressed with her lamp designs. They reveal an ideal combination of materials like wood, brass and copper with the lustrous quality of glass that has been blown to the limits of what is technically possible – they are remarkable. In 2018, we are focussing on the subject of light and emphasising its importance as a creative design element. With this in mind, we also want to let our prestige project ‘Das Haus’ shine in a special light – in the truest sense. And, as a highly talented designer of lighting products, Lucie Koldova is the perfect person to do this.”

Bohemian glass, also known as Bohemia crystal, enjoys an unparalleled reputation around the world. In her designs, Lucie Koldova demonstrates how this tradition can be interpreted in a modern style and at the highest standard. In 2010, shortly after graduating from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, she achieved her international breakthrough with her lamp collection “Muffins” (for Brokis), produced in collaboration with Dan Yeffet in Paris. Their simple, elegant, sensual form and the attention to detail highlight the fine materials used and their high-quality workmanship. The designer’s knowledge and appreciation of the craft of glass production are expressed particularly strongly when combined with wood, marble or onyx. Lucie Koldova has been named “Czech Designer of the Year” and “Elle Decoration Talent”.

In 2009, the designer moved from Prague to Paris where, in 2010, she founded the Lucie Koldova Studio.She works for prestigious companies in the lighting and furniture sector including Brokis, PER/USE, La Chance and Haymann Editions. Today, the 34-year-old is once again working with her studio based in the city on the River Vltava. Her selection as the guest of honour for the internationally renowned, highly experimental design event “Das Haus” gives the designer from the Czech Republic a unique opportunity to realise the full potential of a structure’s interior design through the use of artificial or artistically arranged light.

A home: created by an atmosphere full of light

“Das Haus 2018” will be shaped less by walls than by lighting cells in which light, appearing in various forms and controlled in different ways, will not only mark out the space, but also support its function and a specific sentiment. “In my ‘Haus’, light will play the main role, and the furniture will complete the rooms – and not the other way around!”, says Lucie Koldova, summing up the new characteristics of “Das Haus” in a nutshell.

By designing different lighting layouts and specific light-related emotions in every lighting cell, Koldova is able to achieve interesting visual contradictions. Because we experience a variety of stressful situations in our everyday lives, the designer is trying to find a balance in her version of “Das Haus”. “People constantly swing back and forth between their feelings and moods; at home they should have the opportunity to feel calm and to rest. Light can help in these situations”, says Koldova. “An ideal living space therefore offers a wide variety of mood levels, because its rooms close the circle between the ideas in our emotional world and the demands of real life.” As a result, every room in Koldova’s “Haus” aims to represent a certain feeling and perform a practical role in everyday life in order to satisfy individual needs. Then, at its heart, a living room represents shared experiences.

“Das Haus” – half portrait of the designer, half future-focused concept

The “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” installation is a simulated residential house at the international interiors show imm cologne. Every year, a new designer is nominated and, based on their plans and designs, the fair organises the erection of an approximately 180-square-metre house in the Pure Editions area, Hall 2.2. The furniture, colours, materials, lighting and accessories are also selected by the designer, rendering the finished house an individual configuration of interior design. The integrated concept should not just be future-orientated, but also practical and, above all, authentic. “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage” is therefore a portrait of a designer as well as a visionary concept; an example of how one can create one’s own world as an expression of one’s own personality. The project deals not just with contemporary furnishing trends but also with the aspirations of the viewing public as well as social change.

RetroCOuleur: Maya-Grasshopper Workshop, ArchitectScripta, December 2017 Athens, Greece



Two Weeks starting the 11th of December until the 21st of December.

ArchitectScripta is organizing an international workshop of Advanced Architectural Design, part of an ongoing academic research, which introduces participants into contemporary discussions of formal exploration in Architecture and Art, through technical attainment of design and production. The Precise Inaccuracy by ArchitectScripta is under the auspices of Benaki Museum, the Hellenic Institute of Architecture and the Athens School of fine Arts. It is an opportunity for architects, students of Architecture and Art, professionals designers and artists to join and exchange ideas.


The Workshop will run primarily using AutoDesk MAYA and Rhino GRASSHOPPER, including other fundamental software digital design tools.

1.The main aspiration of this workshop is to precisely develop a critical argument based on an individual research, which will translate into pure geometrical-formal exploration; the format will be an ongoing deskcrit symposium.

2. Rather than assignments, the research will be divided into stages, tactics and strategies.

3. The students will develop an expertise in a specific Topological territory; this territory will emerge for a hybrid between 4 main intellectual fields, from the following menu:


A. STRUCTURAL-RIGID-EfficienciesFilms, Case Studies, A topological development of, Dynamics Techniques, Corrupting structure, prosthetic, rigid structural system with soft components – paradox.

B. SKIN-SURFACE-MASS EfficienciesWe will approach ideas of Color, Transparencies, Reflections, Refraction, Textures, patterns, textile animals skin, surface effects, skin as mass, skin as volume, transparencies, opacities, corrugations.

C. GROUNDSCAPE Efficiencies Plug into, dig in/out, scratch, stitch, seams, corrode, erode, articulate organization, heterotopia, dystopia.

D. MULTIPLICATION-REPETITION-ACCUMULATION EfficienciesCalibration of systems, quantification of parts, behavioral mechanism efficiency, Defensive mechanisms, attacking methods, attaching.

The multiple level of experimentation will occur incrementally every week, but each segment will have a clear main topic of investigation, these are the reasons for the 4 legs sequence, so everybody can have the proper time for each aspect of the problem (intellectual, technical, abstract, physical, etc).


The workshop is a discourse based in the use of multi-layered techniques and production processes that allow for control over intelligent geometries, calibration of parts, and behavioral taxonomies, normalizing an innovative field of predictability. Our goal is to explore innovative, potential architectural expressions of the current discourse around form through technique elaboration, material intelligence, formal logic efficiencies and precision assemblies as an ultimate condition of design.

The workshop will develop and investigate the notion of proficient geometric variations at a level of complexity, so that questions towards geometrical effectiveness, accuracy and performance can begin to be understood in a contemporary setting.

Within this context, our work will turn into design and production; each student will operate within an expertise towards intuition by means of software and advancement of the discipline through a precise contemporary understanding of Architecture’s reliance on surface performance, unspecified systems, scale within the scale, mechanical parts and absurd precisions to expand its discourse. We will focus simultaneously in the attempt to negotiate the question of topology vs. typology, odd genus (Greek. γένος) and species within the condition of space and how fragmented surface state emerges through, constituting a potential assembly of parts and quantified normalities.



City Lung Skyscraper Inspired By Human Anatomy

Urban air pollution has been a long-standing problem in China. Solutions have been drafted many times, but in such urban status, simply increasing green areas is infeasible due to the high cost of land. Oxygen produced by plants will be diluted by the huge urban fabric. Thus, the concept CITY LUNG –providing air cleaning devices to each individual building emerges in such a background. It uses flexible material to build exterior and structure, blows fresh air into buildings by expanding the membranes. The variable shape will benefit the scenery of the city simultaneously. Thus, it builds a genuine green utopia in the firm, gray and rules-based urban concrete forest.

Inspired by the structure of Chlorella cells, double-layer structure formed two coats of space within the building, as the two steps in CITY LUNG’s air purification. The principle is as the alveolar structure inside the lung. Arrange a variety of plants within the ball to make the building a vertical forest. The main body consist of tensed member, which is different from the supporting structure of traditional architecture.

The internal structure uses tensed members as the main body, hangs spherical glass bulbs in the air. The prototypes are plant fruits and microbial cells. Moreover, the component itself create interesting space and rich light effect at the same time.

Due to the impact of construction technology, traditional buildings are always somehow bulky. CITY LUNG can be built in unique non-linear structure with the help of new materials and constructing ways.

Regarding space created by flexible structure, traditional elements like corridors and elevators cannot meet the complex requirements of organization. So, the traffic within the building uses tensed structure, connecting different space by bridges and telphers, to meet the complex traffic demands.

To meet the function of breathing, CITY LUNG uses flexible membrane, which has contraction ability, to build exterior maintenance structure. This type of material has developed rapidly in recent years, owning not only high strength, but can also expand and contract within the change of temperature or current.

Meanwhile, the elastic membrane structure can control the access of air easily. Spherical space is hold by steel cable and net structure. Since each bubble is independent in the system, it is possible to create a different internal environment of them. Each small glass bubble forms a self-sufficient ecosphere by allocating animal and plant species, and using independent climate regulating device in the closed space.

Every part of the CITY LUNG is filled with excitement. In the rule-based concrete forest, it is like a freedom fighter, breaking the oppression. The translucent exterior structure attracts people’s attention, forming a sharp contrast with surroundings.




Slimmest Minimalist Titanium Pen


Los Angeles design studio ensso unveils the titanium edition of  their minimalist UNO pen– a writing instrument with a simple and refined aesthetic with the utmost attention to detail. The design has been stripped down of all unnecessary components and with only 5mm in diameter it is one of the slimmest pens ever manufactured. Yet, it is amazingly comfortable to use because its grip section which doubles as a twisting cap is wider, like a traditional wooden pencil. The innovative cap moves up and down to protect or expose the pen tip. UNO accepts standard D-1 ink refills, which are widely available worldwide from many different manufacturers. It comes equipped with a super smooth 0.4mm black gel ink cartridge.

The aluminum edition of UNO was unveiled in 2016 to critical acclaim and was included in the permanent collection of design museums worldwide. The titanium edition has been re-engineered according to the new material properties with the intention to last a lifetime. This edition is exclusive to Kickstarter and won’t be available at retail.

Nanomatrix Skyscraper

Our world changes constantly. Changes in recent years are equivalent to changes that took decades in the last century. Technology is evolving and its use intensifies in every aspect of our lives. Society and culture are changing at the speed of light. But this process seems to skip the field of architecture.

One hundred years ago, we used to communicate with letters and Morse. Nowadays, trillions of gigabytes of information flow every second between distant locations on our planet, without any complications. In contrast, architecture remains almost the same – a constant skeleton on which systems are tacked. When one wishes to make a difference in architecture or urban fabric, a significant problem emerges – the amount of waste produced in the demolition of one building is huge (27,000 tons on average in New York) and no more than 60% of this waste can be recycled. Any changes will involve great amounts of waste and an enormous amount of power. The current system makes it barely possible to manipulate and match architecture to other fields in people’s lives.

In 2017’s Manhattan, about half of the buildings are more than a hundred years old. If we wanted to keep the city relevant for today’s needs and habits, the waste that cannot be recycled from the ruins of these buildings would cover about 33% of Manhattan. Another problem is the very crowded urban fabric which makes it difficult with to cope with change and urban renewal.

The use of Nanotechnology in architecture will open new possibilities. We would be able to choose spaces which will provide any unexpected need at any specific time, and to provide a solution which changes and evolve over time according to the needs of the evolving population. The bureaucratic way of planning and the dependency on architects and constructors would disappear and a new, free age of architecture will arise.

Step One: Coating the building with Nanoparticles.

Step Two: The particles change the layout according to the needs of the community. The structure can grow and change using both the construction waste and the waste of its residents.

Step Three: The building’s evolution mimics the natural selection mechanism as spaces which are being used will grow and evolve while unused spaces will mutate or collapse and change their purpose.

Step Four: The urban fabric continually evolves in parallel to space-specific changes. Due to the importance of the ground level in crowded cities, buildings will morph in a way that keeps it clear for public use.

The use of Nanotechnology makes it possible to produce a variety of spaces which are adjusted so that each space is shaped according to the needs and wishes of its users, without the need of planners. For example, when a couple has a baby, more human waste is produced, the living apartment then have more energy to grow and adapt to the new conditions. When the child leaves home, the apartment will ‘feel’ a decrease in available energy and current usage, then parts of the apartment will collapse and change to adapt to the current situation.

This adjustment of the city will create a new kind of community that is independent of place. Families and companies can grow and evolve, yet remain in the same location as spaces develop according to their needs. In time, there will be no more specific definitions for floors, buildings, blocks and neighborhoods, the city will become an undefined assembly of program-dependent spaces. Such spaces which are used for housing may be used, in time of need, as work spaces or for public use.





Waterfall Skyscraper

Around the world, waterfalls are found commonly. Many waterfalls have enormous gravitational potential energy. To convert the gravitational potential of waterfalls to work, as a sustainable energy source, is a key concept of my design. I experiment a completely new concept to utilize a precisely designed structure as a medium of energy flow and a bridge connecting people and natural. It is also an attempt to establish a self-sustained structure on extreme terrain.

The over dependence on coal and petroleum has made globe environmental issues, such as acid rain and greenhouse gases. They destroyed natural environment. The use of nuclear energy is associated with high cost and general concerns of public. Radioactive isotopes as main fuel of nuclear reactor is also unsustainable. While population is blooming, usable land is constant deceasing. The idea of Waterfall Tower could be a solution.

Waterfall Tower could be located on the Iguassu Falls cross the border of Argentina and Brazil. Iguassu Falls is the biggest one in southern America, and it is also the widest in world. Its width is about 4 kilometers. The difference in height is ranged between 60 and 82 meter. The flow rate is 1756 CUMEC. The ideal locations to build Water Tower are water falls such as, the Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls and Angel Falls.

How it works
The design concept of Waterfall Tower is deferent from contemporary hydroelectric generator station. To construct a dam-powered hydroelectric generator, water mass is stored by man-made structures. It would change the natural landscape on upstream of rivers and potential disrupt the fragile ecosystem. The concept of Waterfall Tower is different than the traditional hydroelectric generator station. The concept of Waterfall Tower is to arrange a series of water-wheel hydroelectric generators on the cliff with the direction of flow. Water-wheel indirectly convert the gravitational potential energy of waterfall to work, which is done on the wheels of Water Tower to generate electric. Excessive electric is stored up in flying-wheel battery to be used in drought period.

Waterfall Tower can be seen as a multifunctional structure. It can serve the purpose of a hotel, wild animal rescue station, jungle fire station and housing facilities.

Diversion Canal
Exterior surface of Waterfall Tower is designed to shape three-diversion canal, which lead the flow of waterfall into the generator installed on the Waterfall Tower. The flow through the narrow diversion-canal could potentially reach a high velocity. The flow with higher velocity is more useful to make generator work.

Hydro-generator & Flywheel-battery
The main energy transfer device of Waterfall Tower is consisted of hydro-generator, electric generator and flying-battery. Electric generating system and electric energy storage system are integrated to form a closed circular system of energy. Producing and storage of electric energy can be adjusted according to need and runoff change. This system can keep electric balance and avoid producing of energy over or less.

Jordan’s Za’atari, the first official refugee camp that opened in July 2012, gets the most news coverage because it is the destination for newly-arrived refugees. It is also the most concentrated settlement of refugees: Approximately 80,000 Syrians live in Za’atari, making it one of the country’s largest cities. This location was convenient for the project as the refugees will avoid the need to face death at sea for trying to cross to Europe, will be familiar with the climate, language and there’s already a huge settlement with a need for further expansion.


Syria’s civil war has created the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country’s pre-war population — more than 11 million people — have been killed or forced to flee their homes.  Families are struggling to survive inside Syria, or make a new home in neighboring countries. Others are risking their lives on the way to Europe, hoping to find acceptance and opportunity. And harsh winters and hot summers make life as a refugee even more difficult. At times, the effects of the conflict can seem overwhelming.


By looking at the current Syrian Refugee Crisis, there is a need for architects to interfere and research innovative solutions, these solutions can be used in any like crisis that may occur. The project approach is to find a solution not only to resolve the current Syrian Refugee Crisis but also to plan ahead for rebuilding the country after the current situation hopefully gets resolved.

By reflecting that Syria belongs to one of those countries lucky enough to have a native species of honey bees. Apis mellifera syriaca are found everywhere in the country as well as in Jordan, Lebanon and the northern part of Iraq; there are 365,000 hives and the official production is 1,750 tonnes a year. Eighty per cent of the hives belong to the divisible Langstroth-type; the rest being the traditional types; the concept was to make a honeycomb like modular residential units structure that has the capability of any future expansion as the need arises to handle more refugees arriving at the camp. This honeycomb capsules reflects the unity needed for the Syrians to cope with this huge hardship & also to work together in rebuilding the country.

In order to provide a complete life style for the refugees three parks are introduced at different parts of the tower that looks to the outside and opened from both sides of the building to allow air circulation in addition to introducing at the core of the building educational facilities, market place, worship areas & healthcare facilities.


A sustainable design approach was taken as this will educate the refugees about sustainability in both design and life; in this way it’s a chance that after the Syrian Crisis the sustainability factor will be present in the rebuilding phase.

The Units will be 3D printed and will reuse the refugee cabins in the manufacture process. The unit capsule itself will be divided in to two halves, the upper half will have an organic farm to help the residents in growing their own food while also reusing the grey water in the process and the lower half will have a vertical opening with louvers on the facade on both sides to act as a wind catcher for the unit below, and finally solar panels are used at the side of the units facing the sun in addition to wind turbines capsule to generate electricity.
