Yesterday afternoon I told you about the new Longines Heritage 1945, a time-only watch with a story tied to an original slim, flat-bezeled watch that I happen to own. I got to spend more time with this new introduction today and I thought you guys might like to see a few live pictures of it, as well as what it looks like next to the watch that inspired it.

Below you can see the new Longines Heritage 1945 as shown today in Baselworld. It’s 40mm and automatic, so right there are two easily identifiable changes from my original watch. The crown is a bit different too, and of course the sub-seconds register is placed a little higher on the dial, which itself is more brushed than matte rose. But, in all, it is a fairly faithful re-edition. What’s more, the watch as a stand-alone object (irrespective of the piece from 1945) is attractive, balanced, and well-priced.

I brought my original watch with me today to show you side-by-side how the two differ. While the there is no doubt we all would have preferred the watch manually-wound, 37mm, and with a more balanced dial (even those at Longines agree), we still have a really nice time-only watch here that gives much of the same feel as these early Longines time-onlys.

Though it is thicker than my piece, the new Longines Heritage 1945 sits really well on the wrist and provides much of that vintage style without the rarity or price tag. For anyone who is curious, powering this watch is the caliber L609 (ETA 2895/2), and though Longines benefits from the vast array of movements from Swatch, there was still not a manually-wound caliber suitable for this piece available.

What makes this watch so great though is the price. The Heritage 1945 will sell for $1,700. That’s a heck of a lot of look from a major brand for the price these days, and based on what Longines has told me, the reactions from retailers and press alike have been very strong.
