Margot Krasojević is a one of rare architects that focuses her design on the environment. This time, she has submitted Ice Skating Rink design to Tuvie, it is located on a beautiful natural lake in Kamchatka peninsula, Russia. The area is perfect for weekend getaway, it is positioned high in mountains surrounded by gorgeous volcanic terrain. There are hot springs and scenic routes nearby, making this location a popular area among tourists and locals.
The beautiful lake is exposed to natural daylight, but with winter temperatures averaging 20F, it keeps the lake to stay frozen over winter months. The ice rink can use photovoltaic cells to generate an electrical current to freeze the like whole year long when needed for ice hockey tournaments. The system would flood the rink below the surface to keep it frozen and strengthen the ice.

This Ice Skating Rink is a multi-purpose architecture, it features an outdoor cinema as well as a natural geothermal spa. The design of the structure reflects the fluid nature and ever changing state of the environment. Geothermal turbines are used to keep the lake at frozen temperature while provide an energy source for the cinema.
The ice rink is enclosed with a sequence of striated cedar wood sections that create a dynamic relationship between the environment and project’s features. There are photovoltaic cells installed at the canopy, they hold the light and cinema projector outlets also provide area with charging and docking stations. Any unused energy would be stored into the grid, these photovoltaic cells absorb as much as solar energy to prevent the ice rink from melting.
The second stage of this project is to adapt to the formal configuration of the ice skating rink so that it can run by solar energy entirely in Mongolian desert. It means that the rink would be self-sufficient with renewable energy, no need for harmful CO2 or mechanical refrigeration.
Tuvie has received “Photovoltaic Ice Skating Rink” project from our ‘Submit A Design‘ feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their design/concept for publication.
