Design Indaba announces speakers and festival programme

Design Indaba takes place at Cape Town’s Artscape theatre from March 1-4. Senegalese fashion designer Selly Raby Kane was appointed creative director of the festival this year and has curated a diverse line-up of talks and events spanning music, art, film and design.

Conference speakers include Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, artist Olafur Eliasson, Ikea creative director Marcus Engman, interaction designer Nelly Ben Hayoun, Duolingo founder Luis von Ahn, visual artist and interaction designer Ekene Ijeoma (co-creator of The Refugee Project) and Brian Collins, co-founder of New York branding agency Collins.

The conference also aims to champion African creativity. African speakers include Johannesburg product design team Dokter and Misses, Kenyan photographer Osborne Macharia and Zimbabwean activist Chido Govera. (Govera was orphaned age seven and now runs The Future of Hope Foundation, which teaches people in developing countries how to farm mushrooms using coffee waste). A Global Graduates programme of talks will introduce emerging creative talent from around the world.

Alongside the conference, the festival programme includes a nightly series of talks, screenings and live music performances. Selly Raby Kane has also curated interactive artworks and installations for the venue. Exhibitions at the Artscape will showcase emerging creative talent in South Africa and shortlisted entries to a competition to find the country’s most beautiful object.
