Quick Take

No, you have not read the headline of this story wrong. The watch you see here is indeed an AP Research & Development piece. This is going to surprise a whole lot of folks, who’d be right not to expect a 950 platinum-cased perpetual calendar watch to be the follow up to the groundbreaking Royal Oak Concept RD#1, a watch that after all debuted a completely new system for enhancing the audibility of chiming watches. But read on. This watch is a major breakthrough.

Why This Watch Matters

What we have here is the thinnest automatic perpetual calendar in the world. The new in-house 5133 movement is just 2.89 mm thick, an almost unfathomably svelte figure for a mechanism from which so many functions are derived. The watch itself watch comes in at 6.30mm thick and has taken five years to develop, meaning that this project’s life began around the time that AP CEO Francois Henry Bennahmias took the reins of the company in 2013. Just to offer a little perspective on what this watch means – the  Royal Oak Extra-Thin, a 39mm time-and-date automatic, is significantly thicker, at 8.1mm. And the Royal Oak Self-Winding, a 41mm automatic, is 9.8mm thick. The existing Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, available in a range a materials, including ceramic, comes in at 9.5mm thin. It’s even a hair thinner than the 33mm Royal Oak Quartz model.

The new RD#2 might not be as flashy as the RD#1, but it’s every bit as impressive.

Initial Thoughts

This is an exciting development for Audemars Piguet. It stands to reason that we can expect additional ultra-thin complications and time only watches from AP. I saw Francois-Henry Bennahmias in Miami in December and he told me that Audemars Piguet would have a watch at SIHH that would be  the equivalent of breaking the record of the 100 meter dash, and by a large margin. Francois’s certainly never been averse to making bold statements, and I have to say that this watch lives up to the high expectations set by that remark.
