In case you were wondering if Audemars Piguet was going to unveil anything complicated this year, wonder no longer. The caliber 2885 movement includes a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and split-seconds chronographs, and has been in use for a number of years now. Since 2014, AP has been utilizing it in the 44mm Offshore case with some element of ceramic (originally black ceramic bezel, pushers, and crown), but this is the first time we’re seeing the Offshore Grande Complication in full ceramic configurations, and we’re getting contrasting black and white models to boot.
Why This Watch Matters
Audemars Piguet hasn’t been shy about the use of ceramic over the years. The most striking example of this is of course last year’s Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in full black ceramic (which was no doubt one of the hottest watches of 2017). These two grand comps are in the same spirit – they take the familiar Royal Oak form and render it in sleek solid black or solid white ceramic. Only the titanium pushers interrupt the endless landscape of ceramic. It’s fun to see AP combining its top-tier manufacturing prowess with their penchant for dramatic styling.
I mean…what is there to say here? These are mega watches in the truest sense, though they’re made to be rugged enough to actual wear. However, I’m not sure I’d wear a white ceramic Grande Complication to the pool at a swanky South Beach hotel, though it would probably look perfect at home there. With these two, I’m content to admire them from afar.
