Today we have three new chronographs to announce from F.P. Journe – but these are not just any new chronographs. Far from it. If you read HODINKEE and followed the Geneva watch auctions in November, you already know where this is going.
All three are 44mm in diameter, with start, stop, and reset operated via the pusher just above the crown. The pusher below the crown is used for the split-seconds function. Like Journe’s contribution to Only Watch, these chronographs feature direct gearing with a rocking pinion in order to avoid an exaggerated jump of the hand when you actuate the chronograph. In the platinum and gold executions, we have beautifully finished Caliber 1815 movements in which the bridges are made from solid gold. In the titanium version, in keeping with the spirit of the sporty and lightweight lineSport collection, Journe’s made the bridges from aluminum. The bracelet materials of all three watches are matched to the case.
Why This Watch Matters
In the latest addition to the LineSport collection, we have platinum, titanium, and red gold monopusher splits that are even more complicated than the unique tantalum-cased beauty that sold for CHF 1.15 million in Geneva in November. Journe declared that watch and the movement within would not be reproduced, in keeping with the spirit of Only Watch, and he’s kept his word. The new watch being announced this week is in fact a totally new reference with a modified movement that adds a new complication to the mix in the form of a big date display.
I’m very happy to see that Journe’s contribution to Only Watch will live on in this new reference, but I would have preferred to have seen it in a line other than LineSport, to be honest. Some people love it, but the rubber-accented cases and bracelets of this line have never been my favorite Journe designs.
