Recent Cities

I just got back from recent trips to Ho Chi Minh City and Melbourne Australia.  Both are places I haven’t been to in a really long time.   I was last in Ho Chi MInh was on a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia with my dad.  It has changed and developed so much since that time.  It has been even longer since I have been to Melbourne.

I was pretty busy with work in Vietnam.  I got out for a short walk but it was so hot that I didn’t stay out that long.   I would struggle to be a street photographer in Vietnam.

Oh

Oh

Meet Oh, a friend of mine from Thailand working in Vietnam.  We caught the Conor McGregor fight on Sunday morning before I flew out.  I was surprised how packed the bars were at 8AM for the fight.

While Conor didn’t win it was an impressive show for a non-boxer to fight the best boxer ever.  Overall is was a good fight.   I look forward to his return to MMA.

Starbucks

Starbucks

It’s about 75 Kilometers from my house to Narita.  There is no convenient place to grab coffee leaving my house before getting on the highway.  I usually leave pretty early for the airport so coffee is a must.  I once heard there was a Starbucks on the way to Nartia but I have never been able to find it.   I finally found it on one of my recent trips.  It’s at one of the rest stops about half way to Narita.   I’ve check a few different stops in the past but it was never the right one.   I now have a happy half way point to stop off at now on my way to Narita.

This is what I looks like when I settle in for 19 hours of travel.  Door to door its about 23 hours if you figure it takes about 2 hours to get to the airport and you arrive 2 hours before your flight takes off.  People always forget how big Asia is.

On my recent trip to Melbourne I couldn’t find a reasonably priced direct flight on one of the carries I usually fly.  They were all super expensive and even other carries were super expensive so I ended up flying 7 hours Tokyo to Singapore, laying over for 3 hours, then other 7 hours to Melbourne.   It ended up being a 6 hours longer than a direct flight but ended up saving some money, getting my miles and flying on an airline I like.

Brew Dog Beer

My new favorite beers are Dead Pony and Punk IPA from Brew Dog.   They have a restaurant in Tokyo near my office.  I went there a few months ago when there was a meet up about Real Estate investing.  There is a new 24 hour pub in the Singapore Airport that servers Brew Dog.  A pleasant surprise for my layover.

Hello Melbourne!   I was here for work and spend most of my time working so just a few shots while I was moving from place to place.   I was super impressed with how automated this airport is.  I made it all the way from my plane to my Uber without needing to speak to a single person.  Complete automation.

The construction site was on a day off.  It’s quite a difference from the construction sites in Tokyo.

Shibuya Station

It was nice to have a weekend back in Tokyo.  I got out to Shibuya to run a few errands that have been building up.  I haven’t been there in a long time.   Very crowded.  I think I’m getting old as I don’t enjoy these places as much.

I found where they store the cones.   Much to my surprise they are under 24 hour camera surveillance.  No seriously look, they are.

I’m off to London tomorrow for a business trip for a week.  Thankfully I’m flying out of Haneda vs. Narita so it cuts the travel time by 1 hour and 20 minutes each way. I’m loading up my Kindle so if you have any books you recommend, new or old, I’m open to suggestions.  My suggestion for all of you is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.  It’s written by the Editor of French Magazine Elle who suddenly became ill and was left paralyzed and unable to speak.  He ended up dictating the entire book by blinking mostly talking about what his life is like now and what he is thinking about throughout the day.   He let’s his imagination take him to where he can’t go anymore.  It’s a fascinating read.  I think I’ll likely read it again.

If you have any suggestions for what to add to my kindle please leave them in the comments below.

Be well

Dave
