What happens when something as utilitarian as a bike carrier is created with great design? Can the practical be made visually interesting, safe, and progressive at same time, can it become a product you actually want to use?

Greg Janky & Treasure Hinds at Seattle-based industrial design firm Anvil Studios was recently faced with this conundrum. They were challenged to re-imagine that which isn’t traditionally associated with beauty, a bicycle carrier for children and inject it with a sense of visual sophistication, whimsy, and playfulness to create an unforgettable and iconic product.

In addition to a sophisticated design, the final product needed to address several functional features, including installation that would integrate with most bicycle models and would allow for easy set up…meaning that users would actually use the carrier on a regular basis!

Here’s what they came up with Shell Child Carriers. Rather than a merely practical, bulky build with bland colors, the Shell carriers sport a modern, ribbon-influenced lines that are juxtaposed with a biomimicry-inspired Voronoi shell pattern. Lively colorways, playful appointments, and innovative technology combine to create an intuitive product, which can easily be assembled or disassembled in far less the average 45 minutes it takes to install competitors.
